Brampton has a mix of historic Main and Queen Street buildings, suburban plazas, and modern industrial parks along Steeles Avenue, Dixie Road, Bramalea Road and Airport Road. Many of these properties were built or upgraded between the 1950s and 1980s, when asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) were widely used.
During that time, ACMs were commonly used for:
- Boiler and mechanical room insulation in commercial and industrial buildings
- Floor tiles and mastics in long-term retail and service units
- Acoustic ceiling tiles and pipe wraps in offices, schools, and institutional spaces
As many Brampton properties have changed use over the years, there are often hidden ACMs behind walls, above ceilings, and in service corridors—only discovered when renovation, expansion, or demolition work is planned.
