Lincoln includes historic downtown Beamsville, the Ontario Street commercial corridor,
and a variety of neighbourhood plazas and community facilities serving residents across
Beamsville, Vineland and surrounding areas. Many of these commercial and institutional
buildings were constructed or substantially renovated between the 1950s and 1980s, when
asbestos-containing materials were routinely specified.
During that time, asbestos-containing materials were commonly used for:
- Boiler and mechanical room insulation in retail, office and public buildings
- Floor tiles and mastics in long-term retail units, banks, restaurants and office spaces
- Acoustic ceiling tiles and pipe wraps in offices, schools, medical suites and other institutional facilities
As Lincoln’s commercial core has modernized—with infill mixed-use projects, façade
improvements and interior upgrades—many premises have changed tenants and uses. This
often leaves concealed asbestos-containing materials in ceiling voids, behind older finishes, and in corridors
and service rooms, which are only exposed when new construction, reconfigurations or
additions are planned.
