Building Permit – City of Burnaby Building Division
A Building Permit must be in hand before you excavate, enlarge, alter, remove or demolish any part of a structure (including mechanical systems such as boilers, exhaust stacks or venting).
Commercial Demolition Permit – Planning & Development Department
Separate approval is mandatory when you are completely removing a non-residential building or a multi-family structure with 7 or more units (or any structure on a commercial lot).
C&D Waste Diversion Plan & Deposit (Bylaw 14461) – Climate Action & Energy Division
- Minimum diversion target: 70% of demolition debris must be recycled or reused.
- Up-front fees: Non-refundable $250 permit fee plus a refundable deposit of $2.25 per ft² (maximum $50,000).
- Refund: The deposit is returned once a post-project compliance report confirms the 70% diversion rate.
